Reflection of DS106… A Learning Experience

This class has been one of the most rewarding experiences that I will cherish. This was not just a class but something that created nightmares, incredible amounts of stress, but also an enormous amount of joy. I learned things that made me cry and scream, dammit Audacity. That is a program that I will eventually love but still hate. I have learned techniques that have made me figure out at 40 years old what I want to do for a living. This was such a great experience and have learned more in the past five weeks about photography, audio, video, and making a website than I have ever imagined. I learned that programs existed such as Flickr, and Soundcloud, also how to use Twitter, which was new for me. This final project was the most enjoyable part, now that I have all of the tools to create a story using my beautiful daughters. We have all had such a great time, minus the tears, nightmares, and screaming getting through these past five weeks. You warned all of us, and you were entirely right on how hard this would be but would also be an incredibly rewarding experience. So, I feel like I did an excellent job on this final project, my kids in the hot sun was my worst part about it, and one fell and cut her hand. The one thing I would have changed would be I would have spent more time on Zoom with Dr. Polack to understand what was expected at the beginning of the class and always watch the weekly video’s first. I enjoyed the course so much and am walking away with so much more knowledge about digital storytelling than I ever thought possible. I enjoyed this project the most, as all of it was a project, but making videos and learning to make videos of my kids was the best part. It’s amazing what a $40 video program can do. Unfortunately, I did not have success with After Effects, maybe I will try again at a different time. Thank you for such a great learning experience.

Final Project… Week 5…LAVENDER ROW

Tutorial: Lavender Running

Here I used Movavi to create this short movie of Elle running as she learned her new superpower. First, we went outside and did some video with my phone and she was a little trooper it was HOT. This program is AWESOME and so easy to use.

First I uploaded the videos to the application and then added my title cards.

By chosing the T option you get many differnet types of title cards you can choose from. Click the titile box once you have moved your card into place and begin typing.

As you can see here…

Then start clipping your videos, once you choose one video they all drop in line in the order they were downloaded. You will need to move them around in the order you want them to appear.

Once you have your clips in order, then start to add your fades to create a good transition between the scenes. I chose to fade to black and ripple in my video.

Then I sped her up, you click on the clip and can drag the speed from left to right, I went right to make her appear to run faster and I did this on all clips where she was running.

Then I added audio, GOD HELP ME Audacity. I recorded the Eye of The Tiger from Soundcloud into the Audacity program and saved it to my computer and uploaded it into Movavi.

Uploaded to Movavi and dragged and dropped it into my audio block as you can see as greenish in the screenshot.

I then added my end credits by adding cards.

I then reviewed my movie and imported it to my computer. I then uploaded it to YouTube and embedded it into my blog.

Tutorial: Good vs. Evil short movie

I used Canva to create this assignment of the unicorn that is good but also evil. I first found a picture of a castle with a bridge and uploaded it to Canva. I then dragged the photo of the good uncorn to the picture and chose to remove background.

Background remover…

I then added a text box by clicking the T for Text and choosing the Text box and added my text of Good.

I then chose to animate my picture by choosing animate and picking which animation I liked the best which was tumble.

I then moved to the next picture of the evil unicorn and followed the same steps as above.

I used the same background in this step and added the test by choosing the T icon and add heading. I also chose to animate this and chose tumble for this one also.

With the last slide of the short movie I chose to use the same background, animate and add text.

End Movie Poster Tutorial: Evil clown and Unicorn behind bars

I used Cavna to create this poster. I first uploaded my photos to Canva and then chose the picture of the clown. Then I set the clown as the background.

I then took the second picture of Elle and grabbed and dropped it on top of the clown picture and chose background remover and then placed Elle on the picture with the clown.

Here I added the text to the page by choosing add heading and added the font and changed the color red to see the font through the picture.

I then uploaded the picture to flicker and uploaded it into my blog.

Tutorial: The Making of Lavender Row Movie Trailer

This was fun and A LOT of work! I used Movavi and a credit card when I wanted to export it. Oh well, I can make movies for a year now. to make my trailer, First, make sure to make your videos, then chose to add media files and upload your files to the program.

Then before you start to add your title cards, there are many different choices, Choose the T box for Text and the cards will pop up, you can go through the number of different options on how you want your cards to appear, as you see in the screenshot. I played with different cards and chose the ones that I felt looked the best. I then chose the card and dropped and dragged it into place, Then I added the text to the card.

I also did this with the cards at the end of the trailer for the credits.

Now you need to add fades in between your scenes. I used fade black, here I clicked the option and dragged and dropped it into place in between the scenes. Here you can see the fades as little black boxes in between the scenes.

Now for Audio- if your video has audio- then you need to delete it if you want music instead.

Chose your sound block and hit the delete key on your keyboard this will delete the audio in the scene.

Spubble Tutorial: Need to Make a Change

I used 3D Paint to create this spubble.

First chose your picture under browse files.

Once you have your picture chose 2 D shapes and pick the block that looks like a spubble. Now click that spubble and then use your cursor to chose where you want the spubble to be placed.

Now place your spubble. Here to the right you can change color and size of the outline of the spubble.

In this step you add your text, here you can chose your font, color, and size of the text.

Click within the spubble box to create a text box, here you can adjust the size of the box by usuingyour cursor to drag and expand the box to the size of the spubble.

Add your text to the spubble.

Then I uploaded my image to Canva, which I set Elle in a cage as the background and also uploaded a picture of Elle running.

I then chose to remove the background on the photo, and resize her to very small to fit within the spubble.

I made her smaller by clicking on her and dragging the picture to a smaller frame.

Then I chose the text icon to the right to add a text block to the top of the picture.

I then selected her picture again and made it a little smaller and dragged and dropped it into the spubble.

Audacity: Mashup Tutorial: Lavender Row Commercial

My love for Audacity is coming to an end, this program hates me. I wanted to create a commercial for my movie trailer so I chose to do a mash-up of Disney songs along with songs that gave a superhero saves the day feel, and the last song about always being there for someone no matter what.

I first added the song to the first track. This I did by hitting the record button on Audacity and then hitting play on the track in SoundCloud. Once complete I hit the stop button to complete the track.

Next, I hit mute on my first track and recorded the second track, by adding a new track by choosing tracks, add a new track.

I proceeded with the same steps from above to add the track, hit record on Audacity, and play on Soundcloud, then stopped when I wanted the track to stop. Then I muted this track also. I did this with all of the remaining tracks and then muted them all.

I have not figured out how to me tracks within the different track lines so I copied and pasted the tracks together by choosing the entire line of track and opening a new window and splicing them all together with CTRL C and the CTRL V.

After the tracks were copied and pasted to one single track I then added fades to create a good transition between songs. I did this by chosing fade in, choose the block you want to work with use your curser to chose and then use the option on the tool bar called effects. Chose fade in and the fade will appear within that block.

Seen here…

The part that I did was try and alter my voice; it didn’t go as well as I had hoped, but it is different and advertises the movie. I went to where this gave me the ability to record my voice and then change it to a lower tone. Its a little creepy, but it worked. I chose this option to create a lower tone in my voice.

I then hit record on Audacity and play on my recording and recorded it into my already created audio block. I then edited it by dragging my mouse and deleting the parts of dead silence, and added a fade in.

Here is my voice clip and fade in.

Final product:

I did this on to see if I could make them fly and they were excited that I could do it. So here is a moving Movie Poster. They had a great time laying on a hot deck while I took photos of them, and believe me this was a process. We had a great time doing this though.

In this part of the story, Rose has saved her sister and they are flying past the sunset, happy that they are back together again.

I created this GIF/ Movie Poster with Canva. I first took the pictures of the kids on the deck laying down with arms out. I dragged and dropped the photos on the poster and used the background remover on the top left to remove the background on the photos.

Then I dragged and dropped the girls where I wanted them on the poster.

Now to add the background. I had taken a lot of photos for the photo blitz so I used one that I already had, I dragged and dropped the photo on the poster. Then chose to add as background.

Then I chose to animate them by choosing animate, you have many options to chose from, I chose pan.

Now add your text… By choosing the box labeled T to the center-left side. Add a heading- I added 3. You have the option to chose your font and color on the top middle of the webpage.

Final product:

Choose the arrow near the top right corner to download your file, and download it as a GIF and save it to your computer, and then embed it into your blog.
